How to Choose the Right Cable Gland for Your Cable
Choosing the correct cable gland is essential for maintaining electrical safety, protecting cables from environmental damage, and ensuring a reliable connection. The wrong gland can lead to loose connections, moisture ingress, cable damage and premature failure.
1. Check the Cable Size
Start by checking the cable’s overall diameter, not just the conductor size. Select a gland whose clamping range matches the actual outer diameter of the cable.
2. Select the Correct Gland Material
Choose the material according to the application:
- Brass cable glands – suitable for general industrial applications.
- Nickel-plated brass – better corrosion resistance for demanding environments.
- Stainless steel – ideal for corrosive, marine, chemical and hygienic applications.
- Polyamide/nylon – lightweight and suitable for many indoor and general-purpose applications.
3. Consider the Environment
Ask where the cable will be installed:
Indoor → standard gland may be sufficient.
Outdoor → weather-resistant gland with appropriate IP protection.
Chemical plant → corrosion-resistant material.
Wet area → suitable sealing and IP rating.
Hazardous area → use the appropriate certified hazardous-area gland.
4. Check the Thread Type and Size
The gland thread must match the enclosure, junction box, panel or equipment entry. Common thread systems include Metric, PG, NPT and BSP, depending on the application and equipment.
5. Don’t Ignore Mechanical Protection
A good cable gland should provide proper strain relief and cable retention, preventing excessive pulling, twisting or bending forces from reaching the electrical termination.
6. Verify the Required IP Rating
For outdoor and industrial applications, check the required Ingress Protection (IP) rating. The gland, enclosure and cable entry should be selected as a complete system rather than independently.
